While the internet provides fantastic opportunities, there also need to be an awareness that it doesn’t come without its risks either
Using the internet and being online for many, has become part of their daily life and we are more reliant on it now than ever. So much can now be done without having to leave our homes
We can shop online, order a takeaway, make bank transactions, connect with people all over the world, the list of possibilities is endless and continues to grow as we are now living in a digital age
With so much of our lives now online, staying safe is something we all need to be proactive about
Children and younger people spend a lot of time online, interacting with their friends, playing games online and watching videos, they may not be aware of the dangers online or have the same understanding as an adult, so make sure their devices or security settings have an age-appropriate level of control and access
To keep yourself safe you should always think before you share anything online or on your social media accounts, as once it is out there and uploaded it is much harder to then retrieve should you want to remove it
Once you have shared information it can also be used in many ways to bully, blackmail or scare you
There are a few simple steps to take to keep yourself safe online:
- Create Strong Passwords
- Set up a Pin or Passcode to protect mobiles and tablets
- Look for a padlock symbol when buying online
- Never share your details if asked
- Keep any security software updated
- Always log out on shared computers or devices
